About

This site is an experiment to see if I can write a book on game design one page at a time.  The overall structure is still evolving, but I plan to continually reorganize anyway, so for now I’m focused on learning to write.  I’m struggling with the tone and style of my prose, as well as the detail and depth of the content, so I’d appreciate any feedback at “spheretip at gmail dot com”.  If you just want to tell me my design ideas suck, you can do that in the comments.

  1. Greetings Jaime,

First off I’d just like to say I’m sorry to hear you’ve left Bungie, and hope whatever you do in the future is as successful as what you managed to accomplish there. I must admit, I hadn’t heard about your blog prior to hearing the news that you’d left, so I’ve not been reading consistently(something that will change).

After answering your poll and reading the articles held therein, I was fascinated. In fact the article I personally voted for (Exaggerated Causality) held similar themes to one I had written in the middle of last year, so I was pleased to see I wasn’t speaking nonsense and that some of my thoughts were concurred by such an esteemed designer as yourself, in fact, eerily your name crops up in that article as I refer to your GDC PDF file.

This is the article which refers to you and discusses Bungie’s design philosophy as I saw it: http://arniebennett.blogspot.com/2010/04/by-design.html

And here is the article I wrote back in 2008 when I was only 16 discussing a term I dubbed “Instant Feedback” as I tried to create a solution to what I saw as glaring holes in Gears of War 2’s sandbox: http://arniebennett.blogspot.com/2010/10/instant-feedback-how-to-utilise-sandbox.html

If you could please give them a read I would be extremely grateful and I look forward to reading more articles on your own blog in the future.

I would also like to make note that I’m a Journalism student at the University of Sheffield (in the UK, I don’t blame you for not knowing it) and in the future if there would be any possibility of an interview I would again be extremely grateful, if only to pick your brains on all matters design, both past and present, whilst also discussing certain topics surrounding your time at Bungie Studios.

    Yours gratefully
